The Science of Addiction

What every young person needs to know: 75% of addictions start before age 18, teens develop dependence faster than adults, and the prefrontal cortex does not fully mature until around age 25.

Why the teen brain is different

Your brain will not finish developing until around age 25. The last region to mature is the prefrontal cortex, which handles decision-making, impulse control, and weighing long-term consequences.

Meanwhile, the limbic system, the part that drives emotion and reward-seeking, is already running at full speed. This mismatch means teens experience rewards more intensely and have less biological capacity to pump the brakes on risky behavior. It is not a character flaw. It is neuroscience.

How dopamine gets hijacked

Every addictive substance floods the brain with dopamine, the chemical responsible for pleasure and motivation. A normal rewarding experience, like eating a good meal or hanging out with friends, produces a modest dopamine bump. Drugs produce a surge 2 to 10 times larger.

The brain responds by dialing down its own dopamine production and reducing the number of receptors available. Over time, the person needs more of the substance just to feel baseline normal. This is tolerance, and it is the doorway to dependence.

This process happens faster in teens because the adolescent brain is more neuroplastic, meaning it physically rewires itself more readily than an adult brain. What starts as a choice becomes a compulsion, and the transition can happen in weeks, not years.

The three stages of addiction

Addiction often moves through three linked stages that affect different parts of the brain.

  • Binge & intoxication: the substance floods the basal ganglia with dopamine, producing intense pleasure, euphoria, lowered inhibitions, and feeling invincible.
  • Withdrawal & negative affect: the brain produces less dopamine on its own while the extended amygdala triggers stress, causing anxiety, irritability, depression, and physical discomfort.
  • Preoccupation & anticipation: the prefrontal cortex loses its ability to override cravings, leading to constant thinking about the substance and loss of control.

Why this matters for prevention

Addiction is not a moral failure or a lack of willpower. It is a medical condition driven by measurable changes in brain chemistry and neural circuitry.

Understanding the science does two things: it removes the shame that prevents people from seeking help, and it makes the case for prevention over punishment. A 15-year-old who begins drinking is four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence than someone who starts at 21.
